MOSCOW, Dec 16: The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Monday it had detained more than 6,000 people on suspicion of terrorism in the West Bank since October 7, 2023, with over 2,350 of them believed to be linked to Palestinian movement Hamas.
“Since the beginning of the war, more than 6,000 people have been detained on suspicion of terrorism as of today, more than 2,350 of whom are linked to the Hamas terrorist organization,” the IDF said in a statement.
The Israeli forces detained over 10 people last night in the Jericho area of the West Bank as part of a counterterrorism operation, the IDF said. The military also seized about 1 million shekels ($278,000) intended for “sponsoring terror” and confiscated weapons found.
On October 7, 2023, Israel was subjected to an unprecedented rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. In addition, Hamas fighters infiltrated the border areas, opened fire on the military and civilians and took hostages. Israeli authorities say that about 1,200 people were killed during the raid. In response, the Israel Defense Forces launched Operation Iron Swords in the Gaza Strip and announced a complete blockade of the enclave. The death toll from the 14-month-long war between Israel and Hamas has topped 45,000, with nearly 107,000 Palestinians injured, according to Gaza health authorities.
