Ice Hockey Tournament held at highest altitude

LEH, Feb 8: Attempting a Guinness Book of World record for playing Ice Hockey tournament at a highest altitude, five days Ice Hockey Tournament was organized at Chibra Kargyam in Changthang region, here. As many as six teams with 20 members participated in the tournament.
The participating team included Hockey Foundation USA, Tatra Eagles from Slovakia, Gerinomo from Germany, Rainstad from Europe, Rainer all Starts from Europe and Team Ladakh.
The tournament was jointly organized by Ladakh Winter Sports Club (LWSC),Hockey Foundation USA and Lalok Winter Sport Association. Located at a distance of 160 Kms from Leh, International standard natural Ice Hockey Rink was prepared at the altitude of 4375 meters above sea level at Chibra in Lalok.
The opening match was played between Hockey Foundation USA and Team Ladakh, wherein Hockey Foundation emerged winner.
On the occasion, Ladakh Winter Sport Club President Namgyal Angchuk Gyapo said that it was tough challenge to organize tournament at this height where temperature is about -25 degrees Celsius but such tournaments are challenging to be part of.
He added that such tournament aims to raise fund for the completion of under construction Ice Hockey Rink at Leh.
Area Councilor Tashi Namgyal said that such tournaments are aimed at winter tourism promotion in the region and through such tournaments the youth get motivated to opt for winter sport.
