HYDERABAD, Aug 9 : Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh today inaugurated the nation’s first Animal Stem Cell Biobank, at the National Institute of Animal Biotechnology (NIAB), Hyderabad, is a premier research institute under the Department of Biotechnology’s Biotechnology Research Innovation Council (BRIC).
The state-of-the-art facility will store and preserve high-quality stem cells from various animal species.
The Animal Stem Cell Biobank is a Landmark in Industry Academia Partnership at NIAB, a pioneering facility supported by the Department of Biotechnology and BIRAC to drive translational research in animal biotechnology.
Led by NIAB Director Dr. G. Taru Sharma with her team Dr. Vinod Kumar and Dr. Janani Radhakrishnan, and developed in partnership with HiMedia Laboratories Pvt. Ltd., the biobank will provide quality- controlled animal stem cells and indigenous, cost-effective cell culture media to veterinary clinics, research institutions, hospitals, and industry.
This first-of-its-kind resource will accelerate advances in veterinary medicine, regenerative therapies, and animal cell based smart protein production, reducing dependence on imports and fostering India’s biomanufacturing capacity.
By strengthening industry academia linkages and enabling knowledge-driven bioeconomy growth, the biobank will contribute to farmer prosperity, rural employment, and India’s march towards Atma Nirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat 2047
The Hyderabad- based NIAB focuses on improving animal health and productivity through cutting-edge research in reproductive biotechnology, infectious disease biology, genomics, transgenesis, stem cell science, nutrition, nanobiology, and bioinformatics.
With a strong emphasis on translational research, the institute works closely with industry and farmers to develop indigenous technologies, vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics that enhance livestock productivity, strengthen food security, and contribute to India’s growing bioeconomy.
