JAMMU, Sept 28: Jammu and Kashmir Police have solved a murder case in which the death of a woman was initially projected as natural.
A police official said that the case came to light after deceased’s sister approached the police with a written complaint, nearly a month after the incident.
He said the matter was reported at Police Station Bahu Fort on September 26 when Sabina Sunuwar of Nai Basti lodged a complaint regarding the suspicious death of her sister, Simriti Sunwar, wife of Tej Pal Singh, a resident of Mangnar, Poonch, presently living at Trikuta Nagar Extension, Jammu.
In her complaint, the police official said, Sabina alleged that on August 26, her brother-in-law took Simriti for medical treatment but returned the next day with her body.
“Without informing the police or conducting a post-mortem, he allegedly cremated her at Shastri Nagar Cremation Ground in a hurried manner to hide the truth,” the police official said while quoting the complainant.
He said the complainant further stated that Simriti was subjected to cruelty, bore suspicious ligature marks on her neck, and was facing marital disputes over financial matters.
“Photographs supporting her claims were also submitted,” he said.
Acting on the complaint, Police Station Bahu Fort registered FIR number 286/2025 under Section 103 BNS.
Accordingly, the police official said, a team, assisted by the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and crime photographer, inspected the house where the couple lived, and gathered evidence along with recording the statements of the witnesses.
On the basis of scientific and documentary evidence, police arrested the accused husband, Tej Pal Singh, on September 27, he said.
The case was investigated under the close supervision of SSP Jammu Joginder Singh, with overall monitoring by SP South Ajay Sharma and SDPO East.
Police said further investigation is underway to complete the case on merit.
