Hungary exempted from US sanctions on Russian oil has same exemption in EU

MOSCOW, Nov 9 : Hungary was excluded from the US sanctions on Russian oil exports to the EU, and the European union also made the same exception for Budapest, a spokesperson of the EU Commission told RIA Novosti.

“As part of its sanctions packages, the EU Commission banned imports of Russian oil in 2022, except for Hungary and Slovakia, which have exemptions from the general EU ban on Russian oil imports. The purpose of these exemptions is to ensure security of supply for these Member States. Therefore, they are currently allowed to import Russian crude oil,” the spokesperson said.

At the same time, the EU Commission failed to respond to RIA Novosti’s inquiry as to whether Hungary had notified it of its desire to obtain an exemption from US sanctions against Russian oil.

“The European Commission has no specific comments on the matter as it relates to the application of US sanctions,” the spokesperson also said.

The EU Commission has proposed a gradual and complete phase-out of Russian gas and oil imports into the EU by the end of 2027, the spokesperson added.
