JAMMU, Apr 19: Hundreds of fish died under mysterious circumstances in a pond at Panchayat Ambaran in Akhnoor for the second consecutive day today.
Reports said that about 2-3 quintals of fish have died in this large pond so far. The officials of the Fisheries Department were informed and they have started the process of shifting all the dead fish from the pond.
An official said that the cause of death of these fish is not yet known but the Fisheries Dept has started investigation by taking samples of the pond water.
According to the information, a large number of fish died in the main pond situated in Ward 10 of Panchayat Ambaran on Saturday as well, although hundreds of fish were found dead under mysterious circumstances on Friday as well.
During last two days till now, over three quintals of fish have died in the pond. It is yet not known whether the fish died due to lack of oxygen in the pond or due to eating poisonous substance or some chemical in the water.
The Fisheries Department has buried the dead fish of the pond on Friday and Saturday, which included about 1500 of fish. To save the other fish left in the pond, the department is removing the fishes from the pond and shifting them to other safe places. Apart from this, the Fisheries Department will remove all the fish from the pond and fill the pond with fresh water and then test the pond.
Local villagers say that the killing of hundreds of fish is a matter of concern. The local administration should take cognizance. Villagers say that the faith of some people is associated with this pond, in which some mischievous elements may also be involved who may be trying to spoil the atmosphere in the area, in such a situation the administration should investigate all the aspects.
