Huge quantity of illicit liquor seized by police

POONCH, Oct 22: In a major action against illicit liquor smuggling, Police Station Poonch has seized a large consignment of illegal liquor during a special naka at Qazi Mohra last night.
Official sources said that during the late evening hours, a police party from Police Station Poonch, along with naka staff at Qazi Mohra, while conducting checking in view of the festival season, intercepted a Mahindra pick-up vehicle bearing registration number JK02BA-4786, coming from Poonch towards Mandi. The driver ignored the signal and sped away from the naka point.
The police party immediately chased the vehicle, following which the driver abandoned it at some distance and fled the spot under the cover of darkness.
Upon thorough checking of the vehicle, which was loaded with shuttering material, police recovered a total of 478 bottles/cans of illicit liquor concealed underneath the material. The recovered liquor includes:
XXX Rum – 64 bottles (750 ml each); Chenab/JK Whisky – 30 bottles (750 ml each); Himalaya Rum – 144 bottles (180 ml each); Royal Stag – 48 bottles (180 ml each) and Kingfisher Beer – 192 cans (500 ml each).
The consignment was being transported illegally for sale. The vehicle along with the illicit liquor has been seized and FIR No. 194/2025 under Section 48(a) Excise Act has been registered at Police Station Poonch.
Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the absconding driver. Further investigation is in progress.
