HoD Bio presents paper on Vitamin D at Intl Conference

JAMMU, May 30: Bringing laurels to the Health and Medical Education Department in general and the Department of Biochemistry, Government Medical College Jammu in particular, Dr A S Bhatia, Head Department of Biochemistry, GMC presented an invited lecturer and paper presentation on prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency, an emerging pandemic, at the conference on ‘Vitamin-D deficiency and its consequences on the Health of General Population’.
The paper was presented in the Govt Medical College, Srinagar in front of a galaxy of experts in Vitamin-D research in the subcontinent. The prominent speakers were Prof Afroz Haq, Principal Scientist and Head of Research and Development Division Abu Dhabi, UAE. Dr Afroz is a pioneer in Vitamin-D research in the world and has worked in the Pasteur Institute of Paris, France.
He has been awarded by the Govt of India for his extra ordinary research in the field of Medicine outside India. Another prominent speaker was Professor Abbas Ali Mahdi, President Indian Society for Lead Awareness and Research in India.
Dr Bhatia spoke in length about the prevailing situation of Vitamin D deficiency in Jammu and gave evidence about its correlation with hypothyroidism (Malfunctioning of thyroid gland with increased levels of TSH).It is pertinent to mention that Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with the severity of Cancer, Rheumatoid arthritis, SLE, Diabetes, Asthma, Alzheimer disease, and many more.
Dr Bhatia disclosed the wide spread prevalence of Vitamin-D deficiency in this region of the country. According to the results of the research paper, the Vitamin D deficiency is assuming the shape of epidemic and immediate necessary precautions must be taken to prevent it, changing life style of new generation, more indoor activities like computer, mobile, internet and lack of physical activities,less exposure to sun and in addition changing dietary habits are the big contributing factors.
The experts also stressed upon the need to fortify the food with Vitamin D as has been done in many countries in the world including America.
