AMRAVATI, Dec 23 : Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Navneet Rana on Tuesday appealed to members of the Hindu community to have larger families to counter what she described as ‘”demographic trends”.
Speaking to reporters in Amravati, the former Member of Parliament (MP) claimed that certain groups were deliberately increasing their population with the intention of changing India’s social and cultural fabric.
Questioning why Hindu families should limit themselves to one child, Rana said Hindus should consider having three or four children.
Her comments have drawn criticism and are being widely discussed in political circles.
Rana also commented on the political situation in Maharashtra, particularly the alliance between the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction) and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). She said Uddhav Thackeray’s leadership has weakened and predicted that the alliance would perform poorly in upcoming elections.
Rana expressed confidence that the ruling Mahayuti alliance would secure control of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
Speaking on the split within the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Rana said NCP chief Sharad Pawar remains a senior leader and described Ajit Pawar as part of his family. She added that if both factions of the Pawar family were to reunite, it would be a positive development.
