15 trains to remain cancelled today, 26 to be short terminated

JAMMU, Aug 26: Relentless heavy rains paralyzed rail as well as air traffic as the Northern Railway cancelled 18 trains to and from Katra, Udhampur and Jammu Railway Stations while no flight could be operated since afternoon today.

According to a senior Railway officer, 18 trains were cancelled and four others were short terminated on Tuesday while in view of the prevailing weather conditions in the region, 23 trains will remain cancelled and 26 others will be short terminated on Wednesday.
“Due to heavy soil erosion and flash flooding Chakki River, the rail traffic was temporarily suspended between Jammu Tawi-Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Jammu Tawi-Bari Brahmana Section, leading to cancellation and short-termination of several trains,” he said.
Of the trains cancelled, seven were from Katra (20434, 14610, 12446, 16032, 22462, 22478, 22440), two from Udhampur (74910, 22402) and one from Jammu (12238) while seven trains to Katra and one to Udhampur were also cancelled.
Four trains (22317, 22941, 16031 and 19416,) were short-terminated at Firozpur, Manda and Chak Rakhwalan.
However, the movement of trains on the Katra-Srinagar stretch remain uninterrupted, officer said.
Due to traffic suspended over Jammu Division, the Railway authorities have announced cancellation of 15 trains and short termination of 26 train on Wednesday.
The trains, which will remain cancelled, include 10 from Katra (26406, 15656, 12920, 12472, 20434, 14610, 14504, 12446, 11450, 22462), one from Jammu (12266), two to Udhampur (74906, 74909) and one each to Jammu (12265) and Katra (22405), official said.
To facilitate the stranded passengers in such prevailing conditions, the Railway authorities have taken multiple steps. Food items were arranged in coordination with local NGOs and civil society for the passengers of stranded trains at Chak Rakhwalan, Manwal, Sangar, Vijaypur and Gaghwal while helpdesks were established at major stations like JAT, SVDK, PTK and PTKC with the deployment of supervisors round the clock in control and station. Besides, local transport was also arranged for the passengers at Vijaypur and Bari Brahmana.
SSP Railways Jammu Shailendra Singh said 2700 passengers including Shri Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrims were served food and water at Manwal and other Railway Stations in Jammu.
Meanwhile, inclement weather conditions also led to cancellation of 17 flights to and from Jammu on Tuesday. These include eight arrival and nine departure flights.
According to an official spokesperson, there was departure of total five flights and arrival of six while no flight could operate after 1 PM due to bad weather at Jammu.
