BASOHLI, Sept 8: Chanchlo Mata Fort-the cultural heritage and tourism icon of Basohli has been badly damaged in the recent heavy rains and the administration is silent while resentment is brewing among the locals.
The retaining walls of the 500 year old monument at Basohli housing Mata Chanchlo temple has been damaged due to landslides triggered by the recent heavy rains.
In a handout Shiv Kumar Padha, a Social Activist stated that the damaged wall can further lead to total collapse of the Fort as there is no support left to hold the structure upright.
Goddess Chanchlo Devi is Kul Devi of lakhs of people living in Basohli.
Padha also informed that the matter was reported to local administration, Director Archeological Survey Jammu and also to district administration Kathua but the district administration refused any help while the Director Archeological department expressed inability to spend even a penny on the repair of the Fort claiming that doesn’t fall under their jurisdiction.
Chander Mohan Sharma, Subhash Sharma, Rakesh Kanotra, Rajinder Sharma, Narain Pangole, Vijay Kumar Purohit and many others expressed concern over the damage caused to the Fort and urged upon the government to take steps to save the monument from further damage.
