The law has come down with a heavy hand on Chutalas of Haryana. Five times Chief Minister of Haryana State, Om Prakash Chautala 78 and his son Ajay Chautala 51 and 53 others including two IAS officers have been sentenced to ten years imprisonment by a special CBI judge on charges of corruption. They are accused of illegally recruiting 3206 junior basic trained teachers that violated the constitutional stipulation of giving fair chance to all in recruitment to Government service. This is an exemplary punishment for any senior political leader who has been the Chief Minister five times and continues to be the sitting MLA. There is growing resentment against corruption in our society. People are angry because of government’s failure to bring the culprits to book. However, despite intimidation by Chautala supporters, the judge has stood his ground and taken the firm decision. This will have good impact on the public especially the youth. It reaffirms the concept that everybody is equal before law. Our woes are that laws are not applied and the rot is allowed to eat into the entrails of our polity. However, it is important to be sure that we are not running after scapegoats. Justice has to be equitable and fair.
