Guru-Shishya Parampara programme completes five years

JAMMU, Mar 25: Marking a significant milestone in the preservation and promotion of traditional Basohli painting, the Guru-Shishya Parampara Programme at Amar Mahal Museum today successfully completed five years since its launch in March 2021,
Fully financed and supported by the Hari Tara Charitable Trust, the programme focuses on nurturing young artists through immersive mentorship in the intricate Basohli painting style.
Eminent State and National Award-winning artist Sohan Singh Billawria has played a key role in guiding students and passing on this rich artistic legacy.
Speaking on the occasion, Martand Singh, trustee of the Hari Tara Charitable Trust said the initiative provides complete financial support to both mentors and students, enabling them to dedicate themselves fully to mastering the art form.
He emphasized that Basohli painting demands years of rigorous practice and sustained commitment, making such programmes vital for its survival and growth.
Encouraged by the programme’s success and growing participation, the Trust plans to expand its activities by organizing more workshops, exhibitions, and art camps to engage aspiring artists.
Martand Singh also lauded the enthusiastic response from youth during a recent Basohli art camp held at Amar Mahal Museum as part of the Tawi Festival.
He further appreciated the efforts of Dr Jyotsna Singh and Sohan Singh Billawria for their pivotal role in the programme’s success.
Sohan Singh Billawria noted that the initiative has provided sustained training and financial assistance to budding artists, allowing them to focus entirely on the complex art form.
“It was a proud moment for students to have their works exhibited at Jammu Kala Kendra during the recent Tawi Festival,” he added.
The Hari Tara Charitable Trust, founded in 1970 by Dr Karan Singh, continues to remain committed to preserving traditional art forms and ensuring that the legacy of Basohli painting thrives for generations to come.
