JAMMU, July 20: The former Union Minister and MLA, Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta has demanded a total review of the administrative units in Jammu and Kashmir by observing that the present set up is clearly faulty and discriminatory.
Commenting upon the press reports that some committee of the Government have suggested creation of large number of sub-divisions, tehsils and other units at the lower level, Prof. Gupta stressed that this report should be made public as the doubts are being expressed that the recommendations made by this committee have been again framed under influence of certain politicians and there is lacking of the compassionate and realistic expert approach. This would add more tensions and problems, if the total review is not taken of the present set up, he added.
Prof. Gupta pointed out that Jammu region is having almost the double the geographical area than that Kashmir Valley but it has been given just 10 administrative districts which are equal in number of that of Valley of Kashmir.
He said the need for more administrative districts in Jammu region is greater because at the Central level the developmental funds are provided on the basis of districts and other such like units.
In this regard Prof. Gupta pointed out the Jammu District is the largest in view of its population, Assembly constituencies and even in area. This district is having as many as eleven Assembly segments. Each segment is having large number of electorates. Jammu West and Gandhi Nagar are having not only the large neglected areas but also the highest number of electorates of over 1.5 lakh each. Whereas in the Valley most of the Assembly segments are having hardly 75000 voters.
Prof. Gupta also pleaded for fresh delimitation of Assembly constituencies.
