Gun battle in Kulgam, 3 suspects held

Srinagar, Aug 1: A gun battle started this evening in the Kulgam forest area during a combing operation by the security forces in the area while security forces arrested three suspects in Anantnag district and recovered arms and ammunition from their possession.
Taking on to micro-blogging platform X, the Kashmir Police Zone wrote, “Encounter has started at Akhal area of district #Kulgam. SOG, J&K Police, Army and CRPF on job. Further details shall follow”.
An official said that security forces had launched a cordon and search operation in the Akhal forest area after inputs about the presence of terrorists in the area. He said that in the evening the terrorists fired at the security forces leading to a gun battle. He said that the intermittent firing was going on.
In the meantime, police today arrested three suspects along with arms and ammunition in Anantnag district.

A police spokesman said today that the preliminary investigation suggests the trio had procured arms and ammunition from Lashkar-e-Toiba and were likely planning to carry out a terror act in the region.
He said that a joint team of police, Army’s 19RR and 96Bn CRPF during routine checking at Naka of main Road Krad Uttersoo stopped an Alto car.
“During searches, three suspects were arrested after one pistol, grenade and 41 rounds of AK-47 were recovered from their possession,” the spokesman said.
He identified the suspects as Ishfaq Ahmad Bhat son of Ghulam Ahmad resident of Koil Pulwama, Ishan Akram son of Mohd Akram resident of Medora Awantipora, and Waseem Rehman Sheikh son of Abdul Rehman Sheikh, resident of Medora Awantipora.
Police have registered a case (under FIR No. 40/2025 under Sections 18, 39, 23 of the UAPA, Section 7/25 of the I A Act) in this regard at Police Station Uttersoo and investigation has been taken up.
