Gun battle in Awantipora, 2 injured

Srinagar, Oct 13: Two persons were injured in an encounter in Dogripora village of Awantipora in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district this evening while three were injured when security forces fired at stone throwing portesters in Awantipora town.
A gun battle broke out this evening between militants and security forces at Dogripora in Awantipora area of Pulwama district. Two local militants of Hizbul Mujahideen were trapped inside a residential house.
The Special Operation Group of Jammu and Kashmir Police and Army’s 55 Rashtriya Rifles cordoned off the villages after they received information about presence of two local militants inside the villages hiding in a house.
As they cordoned off the village, militants opened fire on them leading to a gun battle that lasted for half an hour. The firing stopped and in the gun battle a local boy and a girl were injured.
They have been identified as 12 year old Iqra and 17 year Owais. They were referred to hospital where their condition was stated to be stable.
The search operation in the village is going on as security forces believed  that the two militants are still in the village. The cordon has been strengthened and the search operation has been put on hold for the night. It will be resumed in the morning.
In the meantime, security forces opened fire during stone pelting by a group of youth near Jamia Masjid Awantipora in South Kashmir’s district of Pulwama this evening, injuring three youth.
Reports said that a group of youth pelted stones at an Army vehicle but it passed off. This led to a traffic jam and Central Reserve Police Force was clearing traffic and they have reportedly fired during stone pelting, injuring three youth.
The injured youth have been identified as Danish, Perwaiz  and Juniad. They were shifted to Srinagar for treatment where Danish who was critically injured was operated upon. His condition is stated to be stable.
In the meantime, Police in Kulgam today arrested the driver and owner of the truck, who transported two Pakistani militants in August this year to Udhampur for carrying out attack on a Border Security Force (BSF) convoy.
Sabzar Ahmad Bhat alias Sahba son of Abdul Rashid Bhat of Nai Basti Qaimoh in South Kashmir was arrested by Police today. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had put Rs 2 lakh on his head.
Bhat had transported the two Pakistani militants to Udhampur who carried out the attack and was wanted by NIA.
