Gujjars demand inclusion of Gojri in official languages, Eighth Schedule

JAMMU, Sept 6: Gujjars of J&K have demanded enlistment of Gojri as one of the official languages of the Union Territory and its inclusion in Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
“We are looking at a high-level campaign wherein Gujjar community MPs from 12 states will be approached first to construct a solid viewpoint for the recognition of Gojri language in J&K,” said Gujjar scholar, Dr Javaid Rahi in a meeting of Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation.
He further said, in next step a group of Gujjar elders, writers, poets and intellectuals will meet other dignitaries in the UT and also at Center to spread information about Gojri for it being “one of the oldest languages of north-western India having 3 million speakers in J&K alone”.
Other speakers stated that Gojri is the third largest spoken language of J&K and deserves to be listed as one of the official languages of the UT.
They claimed that Gojri has very rich literature with over 1000 books available covering poetry, prose, folklore, novel, flora-fauna and history.
On this occasion, a committee was constituted for Delhi to be headed by Sunil Bainsala, lawyer at Supreme Court and Ishtaiq Ahmed Misbah will co-ordinate the campaign at Delhi. Under the said campaign, a delegation of tribal elders and researcher will meet Lt. Governor, Manoj Sinha and local MP besides other leaders to project the demand.
