Gujjars’ delegation calls on SEBC Commission

JAMMU, Aug 26: A delegation of Gujjars led by tribal Researcher Dr Javaid Rahi today called upon the Commission  for Socially and Educationally Backward Classes  at Railhead Office,  here this morning.
During  the course of hearing, Dr Rahi  represented the Gujjars and Bakarwals  Scheduled Tribe groups of  J&K before the learned Commission  and highlighted the history , culture and tribal identity of Gujjars and Bakarwals. He also projected the rhyme and reasons  for their  social, educational and economic  backwardness. Besides, the delegation  reiterates their demands for socio-economic and educational development Gujjars,  Bakarwals and other ST groups.
Retired Justice GD Sharma, who is Chairman of the Commission for Socially and Educationally Backward Classes of J&K, in presence of RL Bharti (Retd IFS), member gave a patient hearing to the delegation.
Dr Rahi  explained that in the past, different  Commissions, Committees constituted by Government from time to time have recommended ‘affirmative actions’  in favour of Gujjars and Bakarwals on merit,  taking into consideration their backwardness and hard lifestyle. He said on the recommendation of Kakasahib  Kalekar Commission , Govt of J&K Order 1956,  Gajendragadkar Commission never- 1967 , Justice Wazir Committee 1969 , Anand Committee   1976 , Sikiri Commission 1979, Mandal Commission 1979, the Gujjars and Bakarwals have been declared backward classes and got tribal status in 1991 and through Reorganization Act-2019 they have been given rights.
The demands highlighted include, enhancement of reservation for  Gujjars and Bakarwal  under Scheduled Tribes from present 10 percent to 12 percent in jobs and admissions, exclusion of Scheduled Tribes of Ladakh Boto, Beda, Garra, Changpa, Balti, Moon , Purgipa other from the list of Tribes of Jammu and Kashmir, fake category certificates issues and others were highlighted before the Commission.
The Commission which gave a patient hearing to the delegation assured appropriate action.
