NEW DELHI, Dec 18: Union Minister and BJP Co-Incharge of Gujarat Assembly Election, Dr Jitendra Singh has thanked the people of Gujarat, particularly Surat which gave all the 12 city seats to BJP, for their overwhelming support in the Gujarat Assembly election, the result of which was declared today. He said, Gujarat mandate is a vote for “Vikas” (Development) and “Vishwas” (Trust).
Dr Jitendra Singh, in a message, said, it is a matter of special gratification because Surat city had been made a focus of election campaign by Congress Party and its allies in the hope that they would be able to exploit the vulnerability of the business community in this industrially sensitive town in the name of GST, demonetization and other recent decisions taken by the Modi Government. However, as a result of repeated and regular interaction with the representatives of Surat trade community, including the diamond merchants and the textile industry representatives, with whom the Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley also had a detailed informal interaction, the business community was convinced that if at all they had any genuine concerns, the same could be addressed only by a BJP-led government. This, he said, is not only a vindication of some of the revolutionary reforms announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but also his trustworthiness, which inspires the common man to stand by him even in the face of difficult decisions.
Speaking to news persons, Dr Jitendra Singh said, he had predicted two months ago that Gujarat election will be a watershed in the history of Indian democracy and it has proved to be so. Gujarat has always been a role model in more ways than one, he said, and added that for the first time in 70 years, Gujarat has rewritten the definition of “anti-incumbency” and “pro-incumbency”.
When asked about the number of seats which may not have been equal to the BJP’s expected tally, Dr Jitendra Singh responded by saying that after 22 years and 6 elections later, if a Party is still voted back to power, this itself is a huge victory and vindication and therefore, the election result not only has a quantitative message, but also a qualitative message that people of Gujarat, like people in rest of India, are ready to be led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the path of development and reform.
