JAMMU, Sept 21: Socio-political activist Jayesh Gupta today raised serious concern over the alarming rise of prostitution centres operating under the garb of spa parlours, massage and physiotherapy centres in Jammu over the last few years.
In a strongly worded statement, Gupta alleged that many such centres, ostensibly registered as wellness or therapy hubs, are openly indulging in flesh trade, thereby eroding the social fabric and exposing youth to moral and criminal exploitation. He said these activities are flourishing because of the covert support extended by certain vested interests within the police and sections of civil society, who turn a blind eye in lieu of monetary benefits.
Citing the recent Sainik Colony incident, where a physiotherapy centre became the centre of controversy after the killing of a Mumbai woman and subsequent suspension of three police officials for lapses, Gupta alleged that such cases highlight the deeper rot in the system. “It is widely believed that the said centre was being misused for immoral activities under police patronage, and the tragic episode only exposed what has been going on silently in many parts of Jammu,” he said.
“This organized illegality is not just a moral issue but a law-and-order challenge. The existence of such centres in residential and commercial areas points to systemic complicity. It is deeply disturbing that instead of curbing the menace, some stakeholders are protecting it for personal gains,” Gupta remarked.
He urged the administration to launch a comprehensive crackdown on such establishments, conduct surprise inspections, and cancel the licenses of centres found involved in unlawful activities.
