CHENNAI: The Union Government has now permitted girl children upto the age 12 to open Sukanaya Samridhi Accounts.
In Tamil Nadu Postal circle, 11 lakh accounts have been opened under Sukanaya Samridhi Accounts (SSA). The scheme (Selvamagal Semipu Account) was introduced to promote savings exclusively for girl children in January this year.
”Though the scheme is only open to girl children upto the age of 10 years, the Union Government has permitted a grace period of two years more than the normal eligibility”, according to an official statement here today.
The girl child born from December 3, 2003 to December one 2005, were eligible to open SSA up to December one this year. The interest rate offered is 9.2 percent per annum which is one of the highest rate offered in Post Office Savings Banks schemes. (AGENCIES)
