Srinagar, July 29: The Government today constituted a high-level committee to investigate cracks that have appeared on the newly inaugurated Bemina Flyover, part of the Srinagar-Baramulla Highway Bypass, following mounting public concern over its structural safety.
According to Government Order No. 989-JK(GAD) of 2025, “Sanction is hereby accorded to the constitution of a committee… to examine, assess, and report on the issue of cracks on the Bemina Flyover.”

The order added that the committee will be chaired by the Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, and includes top engineers and officials from the Public Works Department, Srinagar Smart City Limited, the Traffic Police, and an expert from the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Srinagar.
The flyover, opened to traffic in June 2024, was built at a cost of Rs 37 crore. It stretches one kilometre with four lanes and is located at a critical junction on NH-44, easing traffic toward Budgam, Tengpora, and onward to Baramulla and Sumbal.
However, just weeks after its inauguration, visible cracks have surfaced on the flyover, sparking fears among commuters and residents about its safety. Civil society groups, local transporters, and social media users have raised alarms, urging the government to take immediate steps to assess the integrity of the structure. “This flyover was meant to ease traffic congestion, but now people are scared to even drive on it. The government must ensure it is safe before a tragedy happens,” said one commuter.
