Govt initiates revival of stone quarrying at identified location

JAMMU, Sept 22: Government of Jammu and Kashmir has constituted a committee for finalizing the modalities for revival of customary mining activities of stone quarrying at Panthachowk Srinagar, Saderkoot Bala Bandipora and other related locations.
Headed by Special Secretary, Mining Department, the committee will examine the regulatory framework for revival of customary quarrying practices at identified places, assess environmental implications and obtained inputs from key stakeholders, particularly Pollution Control Committee and Forest Department.
The committee will explore administrative mechanism for structural revival of quarrying activities in line with J&K Minor Mineral Concession Rules, 2016 and related regulations. It will suggest sustained, scientific and community sensitive modalities for operation of such quarries besides recommending a way forward for consideration of the Competent Authority.
One represeantive each from Forest Department, Revenue, Jal Shakti, Rural Development, J&K Pollution Control Committee, and a Professor of Geology, Kashmir University are Members of the committee while Director Geology & Mining Department is the Member Secretary.
