SRINAGAR, June 30: Legislative Council Chairman Anayat Ali today asked State Government to complete an inquiry into allegations of land grabbing of State land at Humhama within two months on the outskirts of city here.
On Tuesday, Government had ordered the inquiry after legislators, cutting across party lines, created ruckus in the House and demanded constitution of a House Committee to probe land grabbing at Humhama by some influential persons.
The issue was first raised by the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker Saifuddin Bhat after the Question Hour ended in the Legislative Council. Bhat had said around 200 Kanals (10 hectares) of ‘Khahcharai’ or grazing land (State land) has been illegally occupied at Humhama, but the State Government has failed to retrieve it causing huge losses to the state exchequer.
Bhat was supported by his party colleague Yasir Reshi, who demanded constitution of a House Committee to probe all such cases of land grab. The demand for the constitution of a House Committee was supported by most of the legislators cutting across party lines.
Minister for Revenue and Relief, Basharat Bukhari, then assured the House that the encroached land would be freed. “I am ordering a high-level inquiry to probe the land grab at Humhama and following the panel’s report, action as per law would be initiated against violators,” he had said.
However, after the Question hour ended in the House today, PDP lawmakers Yasir Reshi and Firdous Tak demanded the Government to give a timeframe in which the inquiry would be completed. They demanded the Chairman’s direction in the issue.
The Chairman then asked the Government to complete the inquiry and submit its report within two months. “The government should complete the inquiry and submit its report within two months,” he directed.
