NEW DELHI, Jan 30: Governor N. N. Vohra inaugurated a week-long Photo Exhibition at the India International Centre (IIC), New Delhi, here last evening.
The Exhibition titled “Srinagar – Voices of Hope”, has been jointly organized by the INTACH, J&K Chapter, and the IIC, New Delhi, which will be open for public viewing daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. up to February 5, 2013.
In all, 56 selected photographs by 30 young photographers have been displayed at the Exhibition. These photographs were taken by 18 year plus amateur photographers of Srinagar during a photo competition organized by the INTACH, J&K Chapter, in July 2012, on the occasion of inauguration of the Lal Ded Cultural Centre set up at Ganpatyar, Habbakadal in Srinagar with the support of the Tourism Department. They were asked to tell their story of the City through the medium of photographs. The prescribed themes of the photo competition were architecture, life and people.
Speaking on the occasion, the Governor lauded the INTACH, J&K Chapter and the IIC New Delhi for joining hands for putting up an Exhibition which reflects on the architecture, life and people of Srinagar city.
The Governor observed that Jammu and Kashmir has a vast treasure of historical sites and heritage buildings of tremendous tourist interest which need to be conserved and protected in a scientific manner. In this context, he lauded the good work being done by the INTACH, J&K Chapter, for conserving and preserving this heritage treasure.
Referring to the photographs displayed at the Exhibition, the Governor observed that the youth of the State are highly talented and given the enabling opportunities they can excel in all spheres of human endeavour.
The Governor and the First Lady, Usha Vohra, went around the Exhibition and evinced keen interest in the photographs put on display.
Saleem Beg, Convener, INTACH, J&K Chapter, speaking on the occasion, gave a resume of the activities of the INTACH in the State, status of formulating and implementing the various projects related to the conservation of heritage buildings and sites and the INTACH’s future plan of action.
Earlier, in her welcome address, Dr. Kavita A. Sharma, Director, IIC, New Delhi, thanked the Governor for taking keen interest in the conservation of the heritage of the State.
Among those present on the occasion were Dr. Kapila Vatsyayan, Life Trustee of IIC and Member of Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board, Ashok Bhan, Senior Advocate, M. K. Raina, eminent theatre director, Prof. Riyaz Punjabi, ex-Vice Chancellor, Kashmir University, and prominent scholars and intellectuals.
