Governor for enlarging corpus of volunteers

JAMMU, May 8: World Red Cross Day was celebrated across the State with zeal and fervour. NN Vohra, Governor today emphasized the crucial need for raising a corpus of Red Cross volunteers at village, block, tehsil and district levels to strengthen Red Cross movement in the State.

Governor was addressing the gathering at the Red Cross Mela organized by the District Red Cross Society, Srinagar, at Joggers Park, Raj Bagh here today to celebrate the World Red Cross Day.
He observed that the Red Cross Volunteers need to be adequately trained and equipped with the required equipment to enable them to provide all required and timely help to the needy.
On the occasion, Governor gave away sewing machines to a number of needy women and wheel chairs to certain physically-challenged persons. He also distributed prizes among the winners and runners up of the boys and girls cycling race and also released Special Cover and My Stamp brought out by the Postal Department and unveiled the Red Cross Logo on this occasion.
Nasir Aslam Wani, MLA, threw light on the importance of the Red Cross movement. He announced Rs 10 lakh out of his CDF towards the construction of Red Cross Bhawan at Srinagar.
Shailendra Kumar, Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, who is Chairman of the Regional Red Cross Society, Kashmir, gave details of the functioning of the Regional Red Cross Society and the activities planned for the future.
John Samuel, Chief Post Master General, J&K Circle, introduced the Special Cover and My Stamp on Red Cross brought out by the Department of Posts.
Farooq Ahmad Shah, Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, presented the welcome address.
Roma Wani, general secretary, Indian Red Cross Society, J&K State Branch, presented vote of thanks.
Regional Red Cross Society Jammu celebrated World Red Cross Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of its founder Sir Henry Dunant. On the occasion, Pardeep Gupta, Divisional Commissioner, was the chief guest, while Dr Madhu Khullar, Director, Health Services, presided over the function. YV Sharma, president, Chamber of Commerce and Industries was the special guest. This year’s theme for the Day was “150 Years of Humanitarian Action”. The programme started with the flag hoisting, followed by patriotic songs by the students of Shangrilla Higher Secondary School and Red Cross prayer. Later awards were presented to the NGOs associated with the Red Cross and also to the volunteers, sponsors and institutions. Earlier, Anil K Padha, secretary, Regional Red Cross Society presented the welcome address.
At Jammu, District Development Commissioner, Ajeet Kumar Sahu, today asked District Red Cross Society (DRCS) Jammu to rope in various voluntary organizations with the Red Cross Movement for extending better and effective service to the people in distress.
District Development Commissioner Jammu, , who is also the Chairman of District Red Cross Society, Jammu, was the chief guest at a function organized by Alexander Memorial School (AMS) to mark the World Red Cross Day.
Renowned Educationist ID Soni, Jugal Kishore Mahajan, Dinesh Gupta, OP Gupta, Vijay Gupta, Rajinder Sharma, faculty members, students and citizens were also present.
DDC also distributed Life Membership Certificates among the Red Cross volunteers and campers of Kurukshetra Camp organized by JRC Red Cross Society. He also distributed prizes among the symposium winners   organized last year on the theme “Youth on the Move”. Prabjot Kour of Government Gandhi Nagar College for Women was given first prize while second prize was bagged by Kailash Gupta and third Prize by Aneet Kour of GDC Gandhi Nagar respectively. A special cash prize was presented to Rahul Matto for his best performance as tabla player.
At Samba, World Red Cross Day was celebrated   by the District Red Cross Society, in the premises of Higher Secondary School Vijaypur in collaboration with Health, Education and Social welfare Departments. About 200 students and Anganwari workers participated in the function.
On the occasion, RK Varma, DDC Samba and Chairman District Red Cross Society, spoke about the mission and role played by the Indian Red Cross  Society at the times of war, epidemics, natural calamities etc.
Dr Shivani Mehta, resource person, Dr Sunita Puri, Chief Medical Officer, Dr Subash, Chief Education Officer, Ravi Dubey also spoke on the occasion.
At Udhampur, to mark the World Red Cross Day, District Red Cross Society, Udhampur in collaboration with Education Department organized a rally to highlight the contributions of Red Cross Society in saving lives and assisting vulnerable people around the world.
The rally was taken out from the premises of Government Higher Secondary School and after passing through the main markets of the town culminated at Deputy Commissioner’s office.
Deepti Uppal, IAS Probationer and Superintendent of Police, Benam Tosh jointly flagged off the rally.
While speaking, Deepti said that this type of activities would definitely go a long way to inspire young generation to extend helping hand to the needy persons, besides maintaining peace and harmony.
Benam Tosh and Secretary, Red Cross Society Udhampur, Dr VP Sharma also spoke on the occasion.
Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) along with scores of children of different schools celebrated World Red Cross Day in Kashmir. On the occasion a mock-drill was held with students to show them how to deal with disaster hit victim immediately by providing First Aid to them.
At Baramulla, District Red Cross Society organized a function at Government Degree College to observe the International Red Cross Day.
District Development Commissioner Ghulam Ahmad Khawaja, urged for strengthening the society in the district to ensure immediate relief and rehabilitation of the affected people during natural calamities.
At Anantnag, District Red Cross Committee, organized a colourful function at Government Degree College (Boys). Students of different educational institutions besides concerned officials attended the function.
District Development Commissioner, Dr Farooq Ahmed Lone while speaking urged upon the concerned to donate towards the Red Cross, so that more and more needy are benefited.
Later, he flagged off a rally from Government Degree College (Boys), which culminated at town hall.
At Shopian, District Development Commissioner, Mohd Javaid Khan called upon the philanthropic people to come forward for the help of needy people in the district.
District Development Commissioner was addressing at 150th Red Cross day at town hall Shopian organized in collaboration with Rehmatan-Lil-Almeen Trust.
Additional Deputy Commissioner, Asstt Commissioner Revenue, Chief Education Officer, Chief Medical Officer, DySP HQ also spoke on the occasion.
At Ganderbal, District administration organised a seminar and blood donation camp. The blood donation camp was organised by CMO Office, Ganderbal in collaboration with JLNM Hospital Rainawari, Srinagar. The camp was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal, Sarmad Hafeez, in which volunteers took part and donated blood.
World Red Cross Day was celebrated with great endeavor, fervor and enthusiasm by the tiny tots of JK Little Millennium, Talab Tillo. The Center Head and Facilitators at JK Little Millennium organized an awareness workshop for the students in which students were enlightened about the working and aims of the Indian Red Cross Society.
