GMC-J’s Ophthalmology Dept performs two corneal transplant surgeries

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, July 25: The upgraded Department of Ophthalmology, Government Medical College Jammu (GMC-J), successfully performed two keratoplasty (corneal transplant) surgeries today.
This milestone was made possible by the noble gesture of corneal donation following the demise of an 80-year-old woman, whose family consented to the donation after being sensitively counselled and motivated by the Department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care Medicine and the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO), Jammu.
The keratoplasty surgeries were led by Dr Ashok K Sharma, Professor and Head, upgraded Department of Ophthalmology, GMC Jammu, with assistance from Dr Nalini Birpuri, Senior Resident, and Dr Simranjeet Singh, Dr Swati Mahajan and Dr Aanchal, Junior Residents from the Department of Ophthalmology.
The recipients of the transplants were a 45-year-old male with vascularized corneal opacity and cataract in the left eye, who underwent a triple procedure—penetrating keratoplasty, cataract extraction, and posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation. The other was a 72-year-old male with a history of a previous triple procedure in the right eye (2024) who presented with graft failure and underwent repeat penetrating keratoplasty.
This achievement was the result of seamless collaboration among the Department of Ophthalmology, Department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care Medicine, and SOTTO, Jammu, with vital administrative support from Dr Ashutosh Gupta, Principal & Dean, GMC Jammu, and Dr Varinder Trisal, Medical Superintendent, GMC Jammu.
