SRINAGAR, Mar 28: Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag has initiated ultrasound (USG)-guided biopsy and abscess drainage procedures for patients with infectious conditions, marking a significant expansion of specialised healthcare services at the district level.
Officials said the facility will cater to patients with Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C, reducing the need for referrals to tertiary care centres outside the district.
The Department of Radiology recently performed a USG-guided biopsy on a Hepatitis B (HBsAg-positive) patient, adhering strictly to aseptic protocols.
“The procedure was conducted using full protective gear to ensure the safety of both patients and healthcare personnel,” officials said.
The procedure was carried out by Dr. Mir Saiqa Shafi, Head and Associate Professor, Department of Radiology, along with Dr. Owvass H. Dar, Senior Consultant Radiologist, with assistance from MTS Junaid Ahmad.
Officials said the team maintained stringent infection control measures throughout the process.
They described the development as a major step forward, stating that it enables patients with highly infectious conditions to access specialised diagnostic and interventional procedures within the district.
