Srinagar, Sept 22: The Department of Orthopaedics at GMC Anantnag has performed a complex revision total hip replacement surgery on a 65-year-old patient suffering from a painful hip condition secondary to previous surgeries.
According to doctors, the patient had undergone cemented bipolar hemiarthroplasty for a fracture of the femoral neck about two years ago but subsequently developed an infection with pus discharge.
In the first stage, performed around four months ago, the infected implant, doctors said, was removed, debridement carried out, and an antibiotic cement spacer was inserted.
The recent second-stage surgery involved removing the antibiotic cement using a specialized technique called Extended Trochanteric Osteotomy (ETO) of the femur, followed by thorough debridement.
“A long uncemented Wagner-type femoral stem and a cemented cup on the acetabulum side were implanted.”
The high-end implants, arranged from New Delhi, were provided free of cost under the PMJAY scheme, GMC said.
The surgery was performed by Dr. Tabish Tahir Kirmani, Assistant Professor, Orthopedics, along with Dr. Vikas, DNB Scholar, assisted by OT Assistants Adil and Jasia, MTS Nisar Ahmad.
The anesthesia team was led by Dr. Anjum Shamim, HOD, Anesthesia, and Dr. Zafar Malik, Chief Anaesthetist, assisted by technician Jaffar.
The AMRIT team arranged the implants, which were not available locally.
“Challenging and complex surgical cases are routinely performed at GMC free of cost under the Golden Card scheme,” doctors said.
Prof. Dr. Rukhsana Najeeb, Principal and Dean of GMC Anantnag, congratulated the Department of Orthopedics for successfully performing such challenging surgeries.
She assured full support for improved patient care at every level.
