GMC Anantnag implants first LBBA pacemaker

Srinagar, May 25: Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag has achieved a milestone by implanting the first Left Bundle Branch Area (LBBA) pacemaker with BlueSync technology in J&K.
According to doctors, the procedure was performed on May 23 on a young male patient who was brought to the hospital in cardiac arrest.
“His ECG showed a complete heart block and a heart rate incompatible with life. He was resuscitated en route to the catheterization lab, where a temporary pacemaker was implanted, ultimately saving his life,” the doctors said.
The following day, the patient received a permanent LBBA pacemaker equipped with BlueSync technology.
While a few patients across India have previously received pacemakers with BlueSync technology, they were implanted using conventional methods.
“GMC Anantnag became the first institution in the entire Union Territory to implant this type of pacemaker in the left bundle branch area,” said Dr. Syed Maqbool, Head of the Department of Cardiology at GMC Anantnag.
He highlighted the benefits of BlueSync technology, explaining that it enables the pacemaker to wirelessly transmit data to a smartphone or tablet app via Bluetooth.
“This data includes heart rhythm readings, pacemaker settings, and other relevant health information. The remote monitoring feature reduces the need for frequent hospital visits, allowing patients to track their heart health from home. Clinicians can also access the data remotely and make necessary adjustments,” he said.
Doctors noted that GMC Anantnag has emerged as one of the few dedicated LBBA pacing centers in the country.
Compared to conventional pacemaker implantation, LBBA pacing significantly reduces the risk of pacemaker-induced cardiomyopathy-a condition that leads to heart failure in approximately 20% of patients who receive conventional pacemakers.
Principal of GMC Anantnag, Prof. Dr. Rukhsana Najeeb, lauded the cardiology team-Dr. Syed Maqbool, Dr. Shamim Iqbal, and Dr. Showkat Hussain Shah-for their contribution to patient care.
