Srinagar, Feb 17: Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag has been awarded three DNB (Cardiology) seats by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences, a development officials described as a major milestone for the institution.
The accreditation allows the Department of Cardiology to offer DrNB training, which is equivalent to a DM in Cardiology.
Officials said the move strengthens both the college’s academic capacity and the delivery of advanced cardiac care in South Kashmir.
The 500-plus-bedded college has expanded its clinical and teaching infrastructure significantly in recent years.
According to officials, the addition of DrNB seats will further enhance specialised cardiac services while enabling the training of super-specialists.
Since the catheterisation laboratory became operational in April 2025, the department has performed more than 3,000 procedures.
These include over 1,000 emergency interventions such as primary angioplasties and pacemaker implantations.
Officials said the team achieved door-to-balloon times of 15-20 minutes during eight primary angioplasties carried out within a 12-hour period.
Beyond emergency care, the department performs advanced procedures including cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT-P and CRT-D), left bundle branch area pacing, rotablation, orbital atherectomy, intravascular lithotripsy, left main and bifurcation interventions, management of triple vessel disease, drug-coated balloon angioplasty, and chronic total occlusion interventions.
Structural heart procedures such as balloon mitral valvotomy, ASD and PDA device closures, and RSOV device closure are also undertaken.
Peripheral vascular interventions-including subclavian, carotid, and lower limb procedures-are performed as needed.
Officials said the availability of these services in Anantnag has reduced dependence on tertiary care centres in Srinagar and minimised the risks associated with long-distance patient transfers from districts including Ramban, Banihal, Rajouri, Poonch, Doda, Kishtwar, Reasi, and Gool.
They added that the accreditation places GMC Anantnag among the leading institutions in the Union Territory offering super-specialty cardiology training and further strengthens tertiary healthcare services in South Kashmir.
Principal and Dean Prof. Rukhsana Najeeb and Head of Cardiology Dr Syed Maqbool credited faculty and staff for meeting the National Board’s standards.
Dr Maqbool said the recognition reflects coordinated efforts across academic, clinical, and administrative teams.
