GLTF seeks revision of summer vacation schedule

JAMMU, June 1: The General Line Teachers Forum (GLTF) expressed disappointment over the recently announced summer vacation schedule for the Summer Zone schools.
“While our counterparts in the Winter Zone continue to receive extended vacation periods, the students and staff of the Summer Zone have been allotted only 38 days of summer break. This is despite the fact that Summer Zone regions face intense heat, humid weather, and sometimes even torrential rains, making school attendance difficult during peak summer months both hazardous and highly uncomfortable, especially for young children and teaching staff,” said the Forum, in a statement, issued here today.
Pointing out that two already declared holidays—7th June 2025 (Gazetted Holiday) and 8th June 2025 (Sunday) have been declared as part of the official summer vacation period, the Forum said that this clearly shows a lack of sensitivity and rational planning by the concerned authorities.
Moreover, the decision to reopen schools on 16th July 2025 is completely arbitrary and impractical. Everyone is well aware that mid-July in the Jammu region is marked by either severe heat and humidity or heavy monsoon rains, both of which are extremely unsuitable for elementary school children and teaching staff, particularly in schools without proper cooling or drainage infrastructure, reads the statement.
The GLTF has strongly urged the School Education Department to immediately revise the current summer vacation order for Summer Zone schools to exclude 7th and 8th June 2025 from the vacation count and extend the summer vacation period by at least one additional week by rescheduling the reopening date to around 25th July 2025.
