SRINAGAR, May 20: A young girl died and her father was injured after a tree uprooted by strong winds fell on them in the Gadarchowgan Keller area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Sunday evening.
In our report titled “Father, daughter killed as gusty winds wreak havoc across Kashmir” published on May 20, it was incorrectly reported that both Reyaz Ahmed and his daughter Sabia had died after a tree fell on them during a windstorm in south Kashmir’s Shopian district.
The correct information is that only the daughter, Sabia, tragically lost her life in the incident, while her father, Reyaz Ahmed, sustained injuries and is currently undergoing treatment.
The incident took place in the Gadarchowgan Keller area on Sunday evening when Reyaz Ahmed and Sabia were trying to secure household items outside their home amid strong gusty winds. A large tree, uprooted by the wind, fell on them. Sabia died on the spot, while Reyaz Ahmed survived and was taken to a nearby hospital, locals said.
In the meantime, at least 40 sheep and goats of a nomadic herder died in a lightning strike late last night in the forest area of Hariganiwan in Kangan area of Ganderbal district.
An official said that the livestock belonged to Abdul Wahid Khattana of Sunderbani, Rajouri, who is presently putting up at Chechi Pati, Hariganiwan, as part of seasonal migration.
The lightning strike occurred amid a brief but intense thunderstorm, catching the animals in the open and resulting in their instant death.
