PATNA, Jan 21: Bihar Agriculture Minister Ramkripal Yadav on Wednesday said that the state has achieved a significant milestone in agricultural exports with the first-ever export of GI-tagged Mithila Makhana to Dubai via sea route.
Yadav said here that the historic consignment of two metric tonnes was successfully dispatched from Purnea district to Dubai on January 21, this year.
Highlighting the importance of the achievement, the minister said that Mithila Makhana, which has received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, is a traditional and highly nutritious agricultural product of the Mithila region of Bihar.
The successful export of makhana through the sea route demonstrates that Bihar is now capable of meeting international standards of quality, packaging, traceability and logistics, he said.
Yadav said that the export of GI-tagged products would play a crucial role in enhancing farmers’ income and strengthening Bihar’s global identity.
He expressed gratitude to APEDA for its cooperation in making the Dubai export of makhana a success.
The Agriculture Minister said that makhana has gained global recognition, enabling Indian agricultural products to establish a strong presence in international markets.
He added that the export will open up new market opportunities for farmers, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) and agri-entrepreneurs associated with the makhana value chain, while also encouraging future exports of other GI-tagged and value-added agricultural products from Bihar.
Describing the export as a historic and milestone achievement, Yadav said it would significantly contribute to the economic empowerment and self-reliance of Bihar’s farmers.
With access to international markets, makhana producers will receive fair and remunerative prices for their produce, ensuring sustained and long-term growth in their income and strengthening the rural economy, he added.
