Germany may reverse suspension of military exports to Israel: FM

MOSCOW, Oct 13: Germany will “reassess the situation” concerning its suspension of certain military exports to Israel, Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil said on Sunday, ahead of a high-profile summit in Egypt aimed at ending the war in the Gaza Strip.

The statement comes two months after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that Berlin would halt permits for the export of military products that could be used in Gaza “until further notice.” According to the DPA news agency, Germany has not issued a single arms export permit to Israel since the decision was made on August 8.

“We will reassess the situation,” Klingbeil told the ARD broadcaster, suggesting that Berlin may review its policy as diplomatic efforts toward a ceasefire advance.

Meanwhile, Egypt confirmed that the Sharm El-Sheikh Summit, aimed at bringing an end to the Gaza conflict, will take place on Monday, October 13, with participation from leaders of more than 20 countries. The summit will be co-chaired by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and U.S. President Donald Trump.

Last Thursday, President Trump announced that Israel and Hamas had agreed to implement the first phase of a peace plan to resolve the Gaza conflict.

Under the initial phase, Hamas will release Israeli hostages, while Israel will withdraw its forces to an agreed line within the Gaza Strip and free hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, including those serving life sentences for terrorism.

Trump’s 20-point peace plan, unveiled on September 29, calls for an immediate ceasefire contingent on the release of hostages within 72 hours. The proposal also stipulates that Hamas and other Palestinian factions will not participate in the governance of Gaza. Instead, administrative control would be handed to technocratic authorities under international supervision, led by Trump himself.

The upcoming summit in Sharm El-Sheikh is expected to formalize these arrangements and outline the roadmap for the long-term governance and reconstruction of the Gaza Strip.
