German Chancellor Friedrich Merz calls US security guarantees for Ukraine, Europe as Alaska summit s silver lining

BERLIN, Aug 18 : While boarding the flight to the US, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that Europe’s silver lining in the Alaska summit was Washington’s assurance on continued security guarantees for Ukraine and Europe.
The German response to the meeting was reportedly sceptical, with Merz opting for a ‘wait and see’ approach, given that it was ultimately non-conclusive despite managing to make some strides.
Trump’s pledge for security guarantees was noted to be termed vague, as Europe maintained that some American troops needed to be on-ground to act as a deterrent.
US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff had suggested the security guarantees could be comparable to an Article five (mutual defence protection) of NATO, it begged the question whether the Europeans would commit troops of their own for Ukraine.
The German response has been largely muted and divided on the matter, as Berlin has been the strongest advocate for Europe’s increased militarisation, viewing Ukraine’s security tantamount to its own.
