Srinagar Aug 29: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) today summoned Dr Naeem Geelani, elder son of Hurriyat Conference (G) leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, for recording his statement in connection with a Preliminary Enquiry (PE) registered with the agency.
The NIA issued summons to Dr Naeem Geelani and delivered it to him in person. He was asked for his appearance at its Srinagar sub-office Shivepora in Srinagar for questioning.
The case pertains to a PE registered by the NIA to probe flow of funds into various bank accounts from overseas which is allegedly being used for funding militancy and fuelling unrest.
Sources said that the NIA has inputs that so far Rs 35 crore had been pumped into at least 30 bank accounts of two banks, including Jammu and Kashmir Bank this year.
As per their inputs on the basis of which they have registered PE, the money was deposited in the bank accounts from Gulf countries and it was distributed in Kashmir for funding militancy and fuelling unrest that claimed around 70 lives and rendered thousands injured.
These accounts where money has been transferred belonged to small trading firms and individuals whose income as per their professions doesn’t warrant such huge transactions.
Under the scrutiny of the NIA is a carpenter from Kupwara in whose account money has been transferred and later it was withdrawn. Sources said that he has been detained by NIA from Pulwama and is being questioned for the amount he has received in his account and its distribution.
The NIA has reports that inflow of money into bank accounts of common people and small time businessmen has been happening in Kashmir for last 7-8 years. The money has been deposited from overseas in smaller amounts of around Rs one lakh or less in bank accounts of common people and small time businessmen to prevent its detection.
The NIA, as per sources, has reports that around Rs 35 Crore have been received in various bank accounts this year and it is being used for funding militancy in Kashmir and fueling the unrest.
The NIA will question all the persons who have received such transactions from overseas and have withdrawn it for funding militancy and unrest before filing proper cases against the persons who are involved in it.
The Hurriyat Conference (G) in a statement issued here termed the summoning of Geelani’s son as an act of “terrifying and maligning” the family of its leader.
“After harassing and questioning Mohammad Ashraf Sehraie, Peer Saifullah, Altaf Ahmad Shah and Ayaz Akbar during their detention, Geelani’s elder son Dr Naeem Geelani has been issued a notice by the NIA to report to its interrogation centre in Shivpora for questioning,” the statement said.
“NIA has been given the task to drag these fabricated cases to Delhi to pressurize the separatist leadership”, the statement said.
