GBHSS Baramulla faces academic, adm crisis

SRINAGAR, Aug 24: Without a Principal since March and marred by “needless postings”, Government Boys Higher Secondary School (GBHSS) Baramulla, is grappling with a serious academic and administrative crisis.
Leaving parents and students concerned and officials turning a blind eye, sources said that the school-one of the premier educational institutions of North Kashmir- has been functioning without a Principal since March 2025, creating a leadership vacuum at a time when academic supervision is crucial.
Sources further said that several teachers “with influence” have been deputed to the secondary wing of the school “without actual requirement,” while other secondary schools in Baramulla zone continue to face acute faculty shortages.
As per details, the secondary wing, with around 120 students in Classes 9 and 10, currently has 22 teachers on its rolls.
This unusual teacher-student ratio has sparked questions about the justification of such postings, the sources added.
In another anomaly, a Punjabi lecturer was recently posted to the institution despite there being no student enrollment in the subject. “This lecturer is drawing a salary without academic engagement.”
Parents and locals also flagged irregularities in staff rotation. “A science stream lecturer has been posted here for more than seven years, while other officials are reshuffled every two to three years,” said a parent.
What has worried parents most is the student turnout.
Official records show that attendance in Classes 11 and 12 has dropped below 25 percent of the actual roll, pointing to a growing disconnect between students and the institution.
Civil society members and parents have urged the authorities to intervene urgently, warning that unless corrective measures are taken, the institution’s credibility and the academic future of hundreds of students could be at stake.
The Chief Education Officer (CEO) Baramulla declined to comment on the issue and directed ‘Excelsior’ to approach the Deputy CEO. However, the Deputy CEO could not be reached for his remarks.
