JAMMU, Nov 2: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Gaurav Gupta today strongly rebutted Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s criticism of PM Narendra Modi’s recent remarks on Jammu and Kashmir’s accession to India.
In a press statement issued, Gupta accused the Congress of “desperately trying to defend” former Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s handling of the Kashmir issue, claiming it led to decades of turmoil for the people of the region.
He said, “While Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was successfully integrating over 500 princely states with “clarity and determination,” Nehru chose to keep the Kashmir matter under his direct control and relied excessively on Sheikh Abdullah.
“Nehru’s indecision allowed Pakistan-backed tribal forces to invade Kashmir in October 1947, after which Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession. These are not political opinions; they are historical facts supported by official records and Patel’s correspondence,” said Gupta.
Referring to PM Modi’s remarks made at Ekta Nagar recently, Gupta reiterated the statement: “One mistake related to Jammu and Kashmir, due to Nehru’s insistence, cost the nation decades of turmoil and bloodshed.”
He said this was “not criticism but a widely acknowledged truth among historians.”
Taking strong exception to Kharge’s remarks on the RSS and nationalist figures like Veer Savarkar and M S Golwalkar, Gupta called them “baseless attempts to divert attention.”
“The RSS played a significant role during the 1947 invasion by aiding refugees and supporting the Indian Army,” he asserted.
