Gaurav Gogoi made Assam Congress president

GUWAHATI, May 26 The All India Congress Committee, on Monday (May 26, 2025), appointed Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi as the president of the party’s Assam unit.
He replaced Bhupen Kumar Borah, who helmed the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee for almost four years.
Announcing the appointment of Mr. Gogoi, who is the party’s Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal also named Jakir Hussain Sikdar, Roselina Tirkey, and Pradip Sarkar as the Assam unit’s three new working presidents.
The Congress leadership is believed to have sent a message to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma by letting Mr. Gogoi, 42, hold the reins of the party’s Assam unit ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
The Chief Minister has been attacking Mr. Gogoi since February, accusing him of maintaining links with Pakistan’s spy agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence. The attacks intensified after the Pahalgam terror strike and the resultant Operation Sindoor.
Mr. Sarma said he would provide the evidence on September 10 after a Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to probe the case submits its report.
Mr. Gogoi refuted the allegations and demanded proof. “The Chief Minister has the habit of misleading people by making tall claims. He should form two SITs in September,” he said.
On Sunday (May 25, 2025), former Congress MP Ripun Bora said the Chief Minister was targeting Mr. Gogoi because of insecurity. “Mr. Sarma is worried about the Bharatiya Janata Party losing the 2026 polls if we project Gaurav Gogoi as a probable Chief Minister,” he said.
“The Chief Minister has also been smarting from his failure to ensure Mr. Gogoi’s defeat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from the Jorhat constituency despite using money, muscle power, and the government machinery,” Mr. Bora said.
A three-time MP, twice from Kaliabor and once from post-delimitation Jorhat, Mr. Gogoi became the Assam Congress president almost three decades after his father, former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, held the post. (Agencies)
