Garbage menace

Sir,
I’d like to bring into light the garbage menace that has grasped Jammu and which is turning ugly day by day. People are seen setting their domestic garbage on fire in their homes, roadsides and even on banks of water bodies. Equal culprits are the owners and managers of banquet halls who set huge piles of disposable dinnerware and other waste on fire.
The locals have to face great unease, breathing problems and itching of eyes. Not only it causes problems to the locals, it adds to air pollution to great extent as these dumps hardly burn down to ashes. Incomplete combustion produces poisonous monoxides and suspended particulate matter. Besides, the residue of the dump is also poisonous for the ground that’s used for burning.
Another poor practice is dumping of garbage in irrigation canals. Being from Bohri area, I have observed this practice often. It should be our effort not to contaminate water bodies as this very water is used to irrigate fields. Our future generations will have to suffer when these toxic effluents enter food chain through contaminated water.
Yours etc…
