SRINAGAR, May 28: The residents of Yarmuqam village in the Dardpora area of Ganderbal district today alleged that despite the installation of water pipes to their area, they still lack proper drinking water due to rusty pipes and poor work.

Locals said that they have been taking the water shortage for over thirty years and hoped the problem would be resolved after the authorities laid new pipes in 2020. However, they claim the improper installation has only worsened their situation. “We have suffered without clean drinking water for the last thirty years. The department installed the pipes in 2020, but they neither laid them properly nor ensured adequate water supply,” Ghulam Nabi, a resident, said.
The shortage has particularly impacted women, who spend most of their day fetching drinking water, disrupting their household chores. Shinaza, married in the village for fifteen years, says she has never seen clean drinking water in all that time. “All the water pipes are rusted. We want them replaced as soon as possible so our children do not fall sick,” she said.
The residents urged Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to intervene and resolve the longstanding water issues in their village. “The issue should be resolved as soon as possible as our health is at risk,” locals said. Fayaz Ahmad, Executive Engineer of the Jal Shakti Department in Ganderbal, said, “We have a 70,000-gallons water distribution plant which is in the commissioning stage and will be operational within ten days, providing pure drinking water to the village. We also plan to replace the rusted pipes, and the issue will be resolved within 20 days.”
