SRINAGAR, July 17: Police today solved the rape and murder case of a woman in Ganderbal after the accused, already in custody, confessed to the crime, with the chargesheet to be filed once forensic reports are received.
Speaking to Excelsior, SSP Ganderbal Khalil Ahmad Poswal confirmed the breakthrough. “The accused was arrested on the very first day and has confessed. The case was not very complex, but we are still collecting evidence. The challan will be produced once the FSL report comes,” he said.
The case initially appeared to be a domestic mishap when the woman was brought dead to District Hospital Ganderbal on the evening of July 12. However, due to suspicious circumstances, police launched a detailed investigation.
Given the gravity of the incident, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted to expedite the probe. The case was solved in record time, drawing praise from local residents.
Investigations revealed that the deceased had visited her sister-in-law in Barkati Mohalla, Safapora, along with her minor son. That evening, she was picked up by her sister-in-law’s husband-the accused.
Later that night, the woman complained of a toothache, and the accused took her to a local hospital. Instead of returning home, he allegedly diverted the route toward an isolated field.
“When the woman sensed something was wrong and threatened to jump off the motorcycle, the accused stopped and violently pushed her to the ground, causing a severe head injury,” an official said.
The accused then allegedly sexually assaulted the unconscious victim. Realizing she was unresponsive, he took her home and fabricated a story that she had slipped and fallen in the bathroom.
