Srinagar, Nov 3: Residents of Gadoora area in Ganderbal district today staged a protest against the installation of smart electricity meters in their locality.
Dozens of locals, mostly women, took to the streets, raising slogans and demanding an immediate halt to the ongoing installation drive.
The protesters said they belong to economically weaker families who earn their livelihood on a daily basis and cannot afford higher electricity bills.
“We are poor people. Paying for food is already a struggle. Not everyone lives in posh colonies,” said one of the protesting women.
The residents alleged that the authorities were ignoring their repeated pleas to reconsider the decision in economically weaker areas.
They appealed to the district administration to look into their concerns and ensure relief for underprivileged sections before implementing such measures.
Some women protesters were also heard raising slogans against the Chief Minister, who is also the MLA from Ganderbal.
“We will not allow the meters to be installed. We are not even able to feed our families – how are we supposed to pay such bills? Our men are unemployed. This is injustice,” another protester said.
