JAMMU, Mar 27: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari today announced the approval of a Rs 1,196.22 crore-unidirectional twin-tube tunnel across Fotu La Pass in the Union Territory of Ladakh.
The proposed project will be developed along National Highway-01 (Uri-Srinagar-Leh), which passes through Fotu La at an altitude of around 4,108 metres, making it the highest point on the strategic highway.
Highlighting the significance of the route, Gadkari said NH-01 serves as a crucial lifeline and primary supply corridor to Ladakh.

However, the existing stretch is marked by steep gradients and multiple hairpin bends, and frequently faces closure during winters due to heavy snowfall and icy conditions.
The approved project includes a total length of 2.65 km, comprising a 1.96 km twin-tube tunnel and 0.69 km of approach roads. Once completed, the tunnel will provide safer and all-weather connectivity, significantly improving travel conditions in the region.
The Minister added that the project is expected to reduce travel distance by approximately 8.5 km, offering substantial strategic and logistical advantages, particularly for defence movement and essential supplies.
The development is part of the Government’s push to strengthen border infrastructure and ensure seamless connectivity in high-altitude regions.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh V K Saxena has thanked Nitin Gadkari for supporting Ladakh.
“Thank you Nitin Gadkari for supporting UT Ladakh. This project would significantly boost the road infrastructure and tourism in Ladakh,” the LG ladakh wrote on X.
