SRINAGAR, Jan 5: The higher reaches of Kashmir valley received fresh snowfall during last night while rain lashed the plains of the Valley and Meteorological department has forecast another spell of wet weather for two days beginning Friday.
The higher reaches of the Valley received fresh snowfall during the night while plains had intermittent rainfall till this morning. The MeT department has forecast dry weather for next 48 hours and another spell of rain or snowfall in the Valley later this week for two days beginning Friday.
Gulmarg in North Kashmir received two feet fresh snowfall during past two days, most of it was received overnight. The resort recorded a slight drop in the mercury from the previous night’s low of minus 5.6 degree celsius as the minimum temperature settled at minus 5.8 degrees. The day temperature settled at 0.4 degree Celsius.
Gulmarg was the only place in the Valley where the minimum temperature settled below freezing point and it was also the coldest recorded place in Jammu and Kashmir. Large number of tourists are flocking to Gulmarg for snow.
South Kashmir, the tourist resort of Pahalgam, recorded three inch fresh snowfall while the mercury there settled at zero degree Celsius. The day temperature settled at 5.6 Degree Celsius.
Srinagar had half an inch snowfall during the night. The minimum temperature in the city dropped by over a degree, to settle at 0.8 degrees. The maximum temperature settled at 7.5 degree celsius.
The mercury also dropped in the towns of Qazigund, Kupwara and Kokernag, and was recorded at 1.6, zero and 1 degree celsius, respectively. And the day temperature at these places was recorded at 6.8, 8.1 and 5.2 degree celsius respectively.
Kupwara in North Kashmir recorded fresh snowfall of two inches, Qazigund and Kokernag recorded 8.6mm and 6.5mm of rainfall, respectively, during the night.
Leh recorded a low of minus 5.2 degree Celsius an increase by nearly three notches from the previous night’s minus 7.8 degrees. The day temperature settled at 7.3 degree Celsius.
Kargil registered an increase of over three notches in the minimum, which settled at minus 5.6 degrees as against the minus 9 degrees the night before. The day temperature settled at minus 1.4.
