Free education for girls

Sir,
The Chief Minister of J&K State Mehbooba Mufti’s recent decision to make the girl education free upto Higher Secondary level in Govt schools in whole of the J&K state is undoubtedly historic and praise-worthy decision of the year 2016. By this decision one is reminded of the revolutionary and reformatory regime of Maharaja Hari Singh in the state from 1925 to 1948. In fact, Madam Mufti has taken ahead the noble cause of women’s welfare, empowerment and upliftment that was taken up with pride and vigour by the Late Maharaja by breaking the strong shackles of orthodoxy of numerous powerful sections of those days which were deeply infected with the ages old anti women practices sex distinctions and superstitions.
Yet much is needed to be done. Particularly the girls in villages are still lagging behind due to one or the other reason. The situation in rural and remote hilly areas is alarming. The girls as well as masses in general there need special attention and awareness pertaining to female education. The agencies concerned should reach out to them at their door steps with all their sincerity, commitment and devotion. The literary rate among girls in such out of sight corners is sadly much lesser than the urban girls. More shocking is the fact that the majority of the rural girls leave their studies half way i.e after/during Middle, High or Higher Secondary schooling. Very few among those reach at the College or University level that too by fighting the Himalayan constraints of varied nature in an unimaginable manner. Moreover, for them to appear in the competitive exams is also a distant dream. They do not even think of such exams.
Such a grim situation pertaining to the girls education still persis in our rural society. It is certainly a matter of concern.
Yours etc….
