SRINAGAR, Sept 12: Police today booked a notorious fraudster for impersonating a high-ranking government officer and cheating people on the pretext of providing jobs in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.
A police spokesperson said the accused has been identified as Illyas Hameed Bhat, son of Abdul Hameed Bhat, a resident of Bakura, Ganderbal. “An FIR (No. 136/2025) has been registered at Police Station Ganderbal,” he said.
He said investigations revealed that Bhat impersonated at different times as a DySP in the National Investigation Agency (NIA), an administrator at Kashmir University, and even a senior officer in the Enforcement Directorate.
“By posing as a senior government officer, the accused lured and cheated several individuals on the pretext of providing government jobs in exchange for money. He also prepared fake and forged documents, including job appointment letters and identity cards,” the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson added that a search was conducted at Bhat’s residence today after obtaining a warrant from the court. During the search, incriminating material, including forged job orders and fake identity cards, was recovered. “It was also revealed that a similar case has already been registered against him at Police Station Nishat in Srinagar,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ganderbal Police appealed to the public to come forward if they have been cheated or defrauded by the accused.
