JAMMU, Mar 4: A four-day workshop on “Peace Education” was inaugurated today at University of Jammu (JU), bringing together experts, scholars, peace-builders and professionals to discuss the role of peace education in fostering social harmony.
The event is being organized jointly by the Department of Zoology and the Institute of Human Genetics (JU), and the Department of Pediatrics, GMC Jammu, in collaboration with EQRA Foundation, Jammu, under the Mission Program on Pediatrics Rare Genetic Diseases.
The inaugural ceremony, held at the conference hall of the Department of Zoology and Institute of Human Genetics, was graced by Prof Umesh Rai, Vice Chancellor JU, as the chief guest, and Prof Yash Pal Sharma, Dean of Life Sciences, as the guest of honour and convenor Prof Seema Langar.
In his inaugural address, Prof Umesh Rai underscored the significance of peace education in today’s rapidly changing global landscape. He stressed the need for experiential learning, which allows students to engage more deeply with their education. With this vision, he introduced the “Design Your Degree” program at Jammu University and its affiliated colleges, focusing on experiential and immersive learning to ease students’ academic burdens.
The workshop designed and conducted by Eqra Foundation is rooted in experiential learning, emphasizing that peace is best understood through experience. It helps children grasp the essence of peace through training, personal stories, and shared experiences. The workshop promotes conscious and mindful living through peace education, personal growth, and community harmony.
Professor Yashpal highlighted a traditional approach to peace, emphasizing the recitation of Gitas Shlokas. He also emphasized on the significance of interdisciplinary collaborations in promoting peace education.
Simran Kaur, co-founder and president of the EQRA Foundation, highlighted the organization’s vision, origins, and mission in her address.
The inaugural ceremony of the workshop was organized under the leadership of Prof Seema Langer and co-convener Prof B K Bajaj. Organizing secretary, Prof Sanjeev K Digra, along with Dr Parvinder Kumar, co-organizing secretaries Dr Nisha Kapoor, Dr Rakesh Kumar and Dr Mohd Younis played a key role in coordinating the event.
