Four-day training programme for tribal farmers concludes at CSIR-IIIM

JAMMU, Sept 1: The CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (CSIR-IIIM) today successfully concluded a four-day training programme under the Department of Science & Technology (DST)-sponsored Science, Technology & Innovation (STI) Hub Project.
The initiative aimed at empowering tribal farmers through scientific training in aromatic crops, value addition and sustainable livelihood opportunities.
The programme was organised in collaboration with CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML), Jamshedpur and Xavier Institute of Tribal Education (XITE), Gamharia.
Speaking at the valedictory function, Dr Zabeer Ahmed, Director, CSIR-IIIM Jammu, said, “The institute is committed to supporting the Government’s vision of “Start-Up India, Stand-Up India”, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015 and steered by Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology.”
He emphasised that such initiatives reaffirm CSIR-IIIM’s commitment to rural empowerment and entrepreneurship in the agri-tech sector.
The programme featured technical sessions, live demonstrations and field training at CSIR-IIIM Jammu and its Chatha Field Station.
Tribal farmers from six villages of Gamharia block, West Singhbhum district, Jharkhand actively participated in the training.
Over the course of four days, participants received training in agarbatti and candle making using aromatic oils, soil testing methods, seed quality assessment, lemongrass cultivation and distillation practices.
Sessions also focused on entrepreneurship opportunities, product packaging and market linkages to enhance income generation in the aromatic sector.
An interactive session allowed participants to directly engage with experts, seek guidance, and explore practical applications of their learnings.
Certificates of participation were awarded to all attendees at the conclusion.
The programme was coordinated by Dr Suphla Gupta (Sr. Principal Scientist, CSIR-IIIM Jammu), Dr Sanchita Charaborty (Nodal Scientist, STI Hub Project, CSIR-NML), Prof Sanchita Ghosh (XITE), Dr Rajendra Bhanwaria, Dr Sabhajeet, Dr V P Rahul and Dr Siya Ram Meena.
